Who pays for toll or congestion charges?

When you hire a vehicle from us, you are responsible for paying any charges that you incur during your rental.

The types of charges you may experience as part of your journey in the UK, could include:

As Europcar vehicles comply with Clean Air Zone and Low Emission Zone standards, there are no charges to pay for these Zones. If you want to find out more about these Zones, please click Clean Air Zone (CAZ) and Low Emission Zone (LEZ) charges.

How and when do I pay these charges?

Please refer to the relevant Government pages on the links above for details of when and how to make payment of the London Congestion, Dart, CAZ / LEZ and other road tolls and crossing charges.

We recommend planning ahead for your journey and please be mindful of road signage to ensure you don’t mistakenly commit a traffic offence.

What about parking fees?

Most car parks in the UK have instructions on site about how and when to pay for your parking.

What if I forget to pay these charges?

If you don’t pay the required charges, you may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.

In the first instance this will be issued to Europcar as the owner of the registered vehicle.

In the event we receive a Penalty Charge Notice for a charge that you haven’t paid during your hire period, we will either:

Supply hirer details to the relevant issuing body to transfer liability and enable them to re-issue the Penalty Charge Notice in your name (as the hirer of the vehicle at the time) and to reinstate the 28 day payment period. You, or the driver, will then need to deal with the issuing body directly; or

If we cannot supply hirer details and transfer liability, we will pay the relevant charge in order to mitigate the cost and then recharge the cost to you as the hirer.

How do I pay or query a Penalty Charge Notice?

In order to settle or resolve outstanding Penalty Charge Notices, you must contact the issuing body directly. (Links above)

Are there any additional charges I need to be aware of?

Each Penalty Charge Notice we receive requires administration time for our team to process it.

Therefore, on each such occasion we will issue an invoice to you, the hirer, for the cost of the administration time needed to either complete the transfer of liability form or to make payment.

This administration fee is a separate fee payable directly to us and does not cover the Penalty Charge Notice you receive or have already received from the relevant issuing body.
